Jane Human Biography

Jane Human is a Norfolk-based painter and printmaker whose work is characterised by a strong sense of place and by exploration of colour, texture and rhythm and vibrant mark-making. Her inspiration comes from direct and repeated observation of the ever-changing landscapes around her; the seasons, the weather, the light, the mood, the moment.

Jane's unique working processes often utilise a 1940s offset litho press by which she builds countless layers of monoprinted colour over many weeks until the image resolves and a textural richness develops. She frequently works in series, allowing for differing interpretations of the same view to develop alongside.

"I am frequently drawn to coastal terrain and transient shifting vistas, those vast spaces anchored by the horizon, where one can explore the connections between land, sea and sky. I have long been inspired by the marshes, creeks and beaches of north Norfolk. It is a quiet land of wide skies and horizontal flow, with interest to be found in subtle texture, passing light, fleeting reflections, unexpected colour; a landscape which reveals it's beauty slowly and rewards patient looking. My working process is a contemplative one and I hope this spirit will infiltrate the final pieces as I aim to construct a space and place which can be lingered within, and will engage on both an abstract and a figurative level."
